Glossary, money, AI, and tech terms
A plain-English glossary of the terms you'll see across Morningfold. Each entry is short by design, if you want depth, the linked articles go further.
A
- AER Money
- Annual Equivalent Rate. The interest rate on a savings account expressed as a single annual figure, including the effect of compounding. Used to compare savings products on a like-for-like basis. A 4.5% AER product genuinely returns 4.5% over a year if rates don't change.
- Affiliate marketing Commerce
- A commercial arrangement where a publisher (Morningfold included) earns a commission when a reader clicks an outbound link and completes a purchase or signup with the linked brand. Disclosed openly per UK ASA rules.
- API Tech
- Application Programming Interface. A way for software to communicate with other software. When an AI tool "has an API," developers can build their own apps that use the AI's capabilities programmatically.
- APR Money
- Annual Percentage Rate. The headline interest rate on borrowing (loans, credit cards). Higher APR = more expensive to borrow.
- ASA Regulation
- Advertising Standards Authority. The regulator that polices advertising claims, including affiliate disclosures. Morningfold's editorial standards comply with ASA / CAP guidance.

- Bank of England base rate Money
- The headline interest rate set by the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee. Most savings rates and mortgage rates move in rough sympathy with this rate.
- BIMI Email
- Brand Indicators for Message Identification. A standard that displays your brand logo next to your emails in inbox previews (where supported). Requires DMARC at quarantine or stricter, plus a verified SVG logo.

- Cash ISA Money
- Individual Savings Account holding cash. Interest earned is tax-free. UK adults can deposit up to £20,000 across all ISA types per tax year. Best-buy easy-access Cash ISAs in 2026 pay around 4.3-4.5% AER.
- CBT Health
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. An evidence-based psychotherapy approach widely used in NHS Talking Therapies. Several digital apps (SilverCloud, Big Health Daylight) deliver structured CBT programmes.
- Compound interest Money
- Interest calculated on both your original deposit and the interest already earned. Compounds monthly in most savings accounts. The effect grows substantially over multi-year periods.
- Context window AI
- The amount of text an AI model can "hold in mind" at once. Claude's ~200,000-token window means a long PDF fits in a single prompt; smaller windows force you to chunk inputs.

- DKIM Email
- DomainKeys Identified Mail. A cryptographic signature on outbound email that proves it came from the claimed sending domain. Required for any serious email sender; misconfigured DKIM tanks deliverability.
- DMARC Email
- Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. A policy layered on top of SPF and DKIM that tells receiving mail servers what to do with email that fails authentication. Recommended setting in 2026: start at p=quarantine, tighten to p=reject after monitoring.
- DPO Privacy
- Data Protection Officer. A role required for some organisations under UK GDPR; not required for most small publishers, but a privacy contact (e.g. privacy@morningfold.co.uk) is.
E
- EPC Affiliate
- Earnings Per Click. The average revenue an affiliate publisher earns per outbound click. EPC above £0.10 is healthy for general lifestyle affiliate content; specialist niches (finance, B2B SaaS) often exceed £0.50.
- EPC (broadband / energy) Home
- Energy Performance Certificate. An efficiency rating for homes (A-G scale). Required when selling or letting a property. Not the same as the affiliate marketing EPC above.
- E-E-A-T SEO
- Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Google's framework for evaluating content quality. Articles by named, qualified authors with verifiable expertise tend to rank higher.

- FCA Regulation
- Financial Conduct Authority. The regulator for financial services. FCA-registered firms operate under specific consumer-protection rules. Always check the FCA Register before depositing money with a provider.
- FSCS Money
- Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Government-backed protection up to £85,000 per banking provider per person. If a covered bank fails, your eligible deposits are refunded within seven working days.
- FTTC Tech
- Fibre To The Cabinet. Broadband marketed as "fibre" but using copper from the green street cabinet to your house. Real speeds typically 20-80 Mbps. Inferior to FTTP.
- FTTP Tech
- Fibre To The Premises. Full-fibre broadband, fibre optic cable runs all the way to your house. Speeds typically 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The "real fibre" you should switch to if available.
G
- GDPR / UK GDPR Privacy
- General Data Protection Regulation. The post-Brexit version of the EU's data protection law. Governs how organisations collect, store, and use personal data. Enforced by the ICO.
- GMC Health
- General Medical Council. The regulatory body for doctors. All UK GPs (NHS or private telemedicine) must be GMC-registered to practice.
H
- HRV Health
- Heart Rate Variability. The variation in time between heartbeats. Used by wearables (Whoop, Oura, Apple Watch) as a recovery proxy, higher HRV typically signals better recovery state.
I
- ICO Regulation
- Information Commissioner's Office. The regulator for data protection, including UK GDPR and PECR. Subscribers can complain to the ICO if they feel their data has been mishandled.
- ISA Money
- Individual Savings Account. Tax-free savings/investment wrapper. £20,000 annual allowance covers all ISA types (Cash, Stocks & Shares, Lifetime, Innovative Finance) combined.
L
- LISA Money
- Lifetime ISA. A specific ISA type for UK adults aged 18-39, with a 25% government bonus (up to £1,000/year) on contributions. Funds can be used for a first home or retirement at 60. £4,000/year contribution limit, counts towards £20,000 ISA allowance.
- LLM AI
- Large Language Model. The class of AI behind tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Trained on text data to predict next tokens; used for writing, reasoning, summarisation.
M
- MTD ITSA Tax
- Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment. A UK government initiative requiring self-employed adults and landlords above certain income thresholds to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates from 2026 onwards. Compatible accounting software is required.
- MVNO Tech
- Mobile Virtual Network Operator. A mobile provider that uses one of the four networks' physical infrastructure (Three, Vodafone, O2, BT) but sells under its own brand at lower prices. Examples: Smarty, Voxi, giffgaff.
N
- NICE Health
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The body that evaluates medical interventions for clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. NICE-recommended digital health tools meet a high evidence bar.
- NS&I Money
- National Savings & Investments. Government-backed savings provider. Premium Bonds and various fixed savings products are issued by NS&I, money is 100% government-guaranteed (better than FSCS, which has a £85k limit).
O
- Open Banking Money
- The regulatory framework allowing third-party apps to securely access your bank data with your permission. Enables features like account aggregation, automatic switching, and budgeting apps.
- OG image Web
- Open Graph image. The 1200×630 image displayed when a webpage is shared on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook). Each Morningfold article has a custom-generated OG image.
P
- PECR Privacy
- Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. The UK law governing email marketing, cookies, and unsolicited messaging. Regulates consent for marketing emails alongside UK GDPR.
- Personal Savings Allowance Tax
- The amount of savings interest you can earn tax-free outside an ISA. £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate, £0 for additional-rate. Above this, you pay tax on interest at your marginal rate.
- PHQ-9 Health
- Patient Health Questionnaire-9. A 9-item depression-screening tool used by NHS clinicians and health apps. Score range 0-27; scores above 10 typically warrant clinical attention.
- Pillar content Web
- A long-form article that comprehensively covers a topic and links to related shorter articles. Used to anchor SEO topical authority. Morningfold's "Complete personal finance setup" is a pillar piece.
R
- RCT Health
- Randomised Controlled Trial. The gold-standard study design in medical research. Morningfold won't recommend mental-health or wellness apps with clinical claims unless an RCT supports them.
S
- SIPP Money
- Self-Invested Personal Pension. A pension wrapper allowing you to choose your own investments. Available from providers like Vanguard, AJ Bell, PensionBee. Offers the same tax relief as a workplace pension.
- SPF Email
- Sender Policy Framework. A DNS record listing which mail servers are authorised to send email on behalf of your domain. Misconfigured SPF tanks deliverability.
- Sub-processor Privacy
- A third-party service that processes personal data on behalf of a data controller. Morningfold's sub-processors (ElasticEmail, Microsoft 365, Hostinger) are listed in our privacy policy.
- Suppression list Email
- An email list of addresses that have unsubscribed or bounced, kept indefinitely so they cannot accidentally be re-added to active marketing.
T
- Telemedicine Health
- Healthcare consultations conducted remotely via video, phone, or messaging. Telemedicine providers in 2026 include Push Doctor, Babylon, and condition-specific platforms like Numan.
- TFR Money
- Total Fund Return. A unified measure of investment fund returns including dividends and capital growth, after fees. Useful for comparing different fund managers on a like-for-like basis.
U
- UK GDPR Privacy
- The post-Brexit version of the EU's data protection law. Substantively similar to EU GDPR; minor divergences expected over time. Enforced by the ICO.
- Unsubscribe rate Email
- The percentage of recipients who unsubscribe after receiving a single email. Healthy under 0.5%; concerning above 1%; investigate above 2%.
